Card Game Series: Oh Hell (Oh Pshaw) In-Person

A Buffalo State Favorite! If you have attended in past years, please join us again! In this "Card Games" series, players will learn the instructor’s version of the game of Oh Hell, sometimes called "Oh Heck" or "Oh Pshaw." In Oh Hell, players must "survive" 10 rounds and will win if they have the lowest score. Depending on the round, players are dealt a specific number of cards, and then a card is turned up on the remaining pack to determine a trump suit (or "wild" suit). Then players examine their cards and, one-by-one in a clockwise manner, they announce their estimate of the number of tricks they intend to take in that round (their "contract"). Plus, an especially nasty surprise is waiting for the dealer when it is their turn to bid! Then play proceeds where players try to take (or avoid!) tricks necessary to make their contract, but they must be exactly right – if they take any more or less than their contract, you probably will hear them utter "OH HELL!" when it is scoring time! Believe it or not, Oh Hell is a great family game for 5 or 4 players, although 3 players can enjoy it too. Players are introduced to the concepts of trump/trumping, taking tricks, following led suits, and discarding.
