Brightspace Basics Workshop In-Person

This workshop is designed for instructors new to Brightspace. We will address the basics of navigation and the user interface, communication tools, and publishing and authoring content. This workshop is suitable for instructors teaching in any modality: face-to-face, hybrid, or online.  

This is the introductory workshop for Brightspace and is required (or equivalent from SUNY) to attend Gradable Activities: Quizzes, Assignments and Discussions; and Gradebook. 


Please be sure you are able to login to your Brightspace account before attending this workshop. You can login using the Network Login option with your Buffalo State username and password. If you are experiencing login issues, please submit a ticket via the IT Portal.

Learning Objectives 

  • Identify the organization and course home pages in the Brightspace Learning Management System 

  • Name the purpose and options of the minibar 

  • Name the purpose and options of the navbar 

  • List all of the alert/notifications options available, and how they work 

  • List foundational course progress tools 

  • Identify how to customize user profiles 

  • Identify how to use student preview mode

  • Identify how to create a course announcement and how date restrictions can be used to control availability ​

  • Identify how to create and use the Calendar and Events ​

  • Identify how to create Video Notes and where to use them ​

  • Identify how the email tool can be used to communicate privately with students ​

  • List how modules are used to organize materials and activities in a course 

  • Distinguish between the materials types that can be added to the course content space 

  • List the steps required to upload a file, create a file, create a weblink, add an existing activity to a module, or edit and delete topics 

  • Identify the advanced options that can be set for content in a course including start/ end/ due dates, release conditions, and tracking types 

  • Create pages using the document templates. 

  • Find resources on the Brightspace Community and within the SUNY DLE Brightspace Fundamentals Asynchronous Modules 

  • Earning SUNY DLE Brightspace Fundamentals Certificate
